British multiculturalism has failed

British Prime Minister David Cameron believes his country’s policy of multiculturalism has “failed” to prevent the radicalisation of Muslims by hindering their integration into the British society.

In his first speech on radicalism and causes of terrorism, the prime minister said a “hands-off tolerance” of those who reject Western values had failed to prevent the rise of Islamic extremism in Britain.

path rejects $100-million buyout offer from Google

Path, which on Tuesday raised $8.5 million in funding, rejected a $100-million buyout offer from Google (with $20 million more in incentives). Our sources confirm the report.

Path is led by former Facebook executive Dave Morin and has a spiffy design team. A personal network that limits your connections to 50 friends, it has hundreds of thousands of users, not enormous by Silicon Valley standards. But 20% of those users are coming back every day.

The space matters

Pay attention to where you have your brainstorming meetings. Don’t have them in the same conference room where you chew people out over missed quarterly earnings.

Pay attention to the noise and the smell and the crowd in the place where you’re trying to overcome being stuck. And as Paco Underhill has written, make the aisles of your store wide enough that shoppers can browse without getting their butts brushed by other shoppers.

We’re sorry, Qatar tells fans hit by Asian Cup fiasco

Organisers of the Asian Cup have apologised to hundreds of fans who were locked out of the final in Qatar, despite holding valid tickets, after security guards denied them entry.

The local organising committee has said it will refund the estimated 700 ticket-holders who were left outside the 40,000-seat Khalifa Stadium when gates were locked 55 minutes prior to kick-off due to the attendance of several VIPs.

Squeeze on living standards in UK

Bank of England governor Mervyn King has said that a squeeze in living standards is the inevitable price to pay for the financial crisis and the recovery of the UK and global economy.

Speaking in Newcastle last night, King said that a mixture of rising inflation and stagnant wages meant that UK wage earners were set for hard times and that this has resulted in the longest decline in take-home pay in the UK since the 1920s.

business of horizontal drilling and fraccing

Fraccing is a process that uses high-pressure fluids to force the layers of shale apart. Carried in the fluid are tiny grains of “proppant” – sand or ceramic spheres – that hold the layers of shale open after the pressure from the fluid fades. It’s the proppant that makes the whole technique work. You don’t have proppant, the gas and oil doesn’t flow.

As the global leader (37% market share) in proppant manufacturing, Carbo is a pure “picks and shovels” play on the ongoing natural gas boom. In 2005, Carbo’s annual revenue totaled $231 million. In 2009, revenues totaled $342 million… a 48% increase in just four years.
